A B O U T
Sarah Straßmann’s artistic practice unfolds at the intersection of documentary photography, staged imagery, and multimedia research. She explores the interplay of physical and digital spaces, combining the technical rigor of the Bielefeld School of Photography with Bauhaus-inspired concepts. Her analogue series and multimedia projects share a central focus: how spaces and images shape our perception of reality and self.
Analogue photographic series— Through empty interiors, urban landscapes, and constructed objects, Straßmann highlights the unseen and prompts viewers to adopt a contemplative role. Rooted in documentary tradition and expanded through experimental staging, her nuanced use of light and composition challenges perceptions and reveals everyday uncertainties.
Multimedia projects— Straßmann critically examines digital image culture, investigating how technologies like smartphones and social media shape visual habits. In her research-based multimedia works — including digital photographs, videos, installations, software, and texts — she reflects on and questions pop-cultural aesthetics.
Her practice examines the interaction of people, space, and imagery, inviting reflection on perception and the role of images today. As artist and educator, she integrates theory and practice and encourages audiences to reconsider their perspectives in visual worlds shaped by both tradition and digital innovation.
